I want to thank the World Link staff for the compelling article entitled “Should I give?” in which Reporter Alice Campbell experiences a day in the life of a panhandler. The article focuses attention on an issue that affects the entire community and does an excellent job highlighting the organizations and individuals who are working to affect change. I am proud that businessman in this community are talking about solutions to impact homelessness and panhandling, and I congratulate Joe Neil and Jim Martin for their efforts as well, who are also members of the South Coast Homeless Council. For those who are interested in helping out, please call ORCCA for information on the next Homeless Council meeting. We would love to have you! July 10, 2011 Coos Bay, OR (June 7, 2011) – Oregon Coast Community Action (ORCCA) is hosting a Wilderness First Aid Course July 9 and 10, 2011. This intensive backcountry medical training course will show students how to deal with medical emergencies when they are miles from help and dialing 911 is not an option.
Wilderness Medicine differs from traditional first aid in many respects. First aid is carried out in the field, and limited medical equipment makes improvisation and resourcefulness essential. Participants will include students from Community Action Adventure’s Watershed, Dunes and Beyond Summer Camp, but there is still a selection of slots for public enrollment.
“We are proud to be able to host a Wilderness First Aid Course on the South Coast”, comments ORCCA CEO Mary Schoen-Clark “ It is important we have the tools to truly enjoy our beautiful state and be as safe as possible while doing it.
This course is recommended for all outdoor professionals and enthusiasts who spend time in remote areas. Graduates will be certified by Wilderness Medical Associates. Enrollment is limited, please call Madeline Enos at (541)888-7070 for logistical and pricing information or Wilderness Medical Associates at 1-(888)-WILDMED for curriculum information.
Oregon Coast Community Action is a non-profit network of programs that help feed, house, warm and educate the communities of the South Coast. ORCCA encourages all our neighbors to be a part of disaster preparedness planning. For more information, please call (541) 888-1574 or learn more at www.orcca.us.

Downtown Coos Bay has an exciting new whale mural located in the Pedway just south of the Egyptian Theatre! The mural is not only a wonderful piece of public art, but also a poignant reminder to protect our bay, and refrain from dumping down storm drains that go directly into our water system. Oregon Coast Community Action (ORCCA) is proud to be a part of this project, along with the City of Coos Bay, the GUILD after-school arts program, and Community Action Adventure, a program of ORCCA. I would like to thank CH2MHill for generously sponsoring the paint for this project and a pizza party for the hard-working teens. Providing opportunities for teens to engage with their community creates a culture of passionate concern for the greater good. Check out pictures of the project at www.orcca.us/yo or find us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/orcca.us.

Earlier this month, many of our friends and neighbors took a moment to help make mealtime a happy time for everyone on the South Coast, and donated food with the help of their friendly Letter Carrier. The National Letter Carriers Food Drive on May 14 generated over 36,555 pounds of food to help families in our region. This was made possible by countless hours of organization and preparation by postmasters, letter carriers, and volunteers, as well as generous donations from the public. Thank you for helping your neighbors thrive. To learn more, call (541) 888-1574 or visit www.orcca.us.
Sincerely, Rollie Lobsinger Director of the South Coast Food Share Oregon Coast Community Action
